Abstract

|
Antimutagenic effects of water extracts of chinese herbs on mutagenesis by 3 direct acting mutagens [4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO), N-methyl-N¢¥-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and mitomycin C (MMC)¡³were investigated in the SOS chromotest using E.scherichia coli PQ37. Among the medicinal plants tested, 32 species reduced the mutagenicity which was induced by 4-NQO. Especially Areca catechu L. and Cassia tora L. were inhibited the mutagenicity more than 15%. Four species (Areca catechu L., Cassia torn L., Rehmannia glutinosa Liboschitz and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge) among 26 active species clearly showed an antimutagenic effect towards MNNG, and 3 species (Areca catechu L., Cassia torn L. and Relamannia glutinosa Liboschitz) among 41 active species towards MMC. Especially the extracts of Areca catechu L., Cassia tora L. and Rehmannia glutinosa Liboschitz strongly inhibited the mutagenic activities of all of the tested mutagens in spite of their different mutagenic mechanisms.
